What’s Up?

What's Up?

f/10, 1/100, ISO-100, 110mm

Another shot taken with the 75-300mm. this is probably my favorite shot from this particular trip, and one I would normally have taken with my 50mm prime. Using the prime lens I would have adjusted the shot significantly to the right and a little higher to emphasize the lines on that side of the image a little more, but I am pleased with how this came out. I love the warmth of the image, the haze in the distance, and the sharpness (which I would have said a few months wasn’t even possible with this lens).

What I believe I learned most from this specific photo is that the chromatic aberration issue I’ve had with previous photos on this lens was not a problem with the lens. Where I’ve noticed chromatic aberration was when I was shooting more or less toward the light source at a subject of high contrast. In other words, a shot pretty much like this one, but there isn’t the slightest hint of this artifact.

The explanation? As far as I can tell, it’s the removal of the UV filter. I have as a matter of course purchase a UV filter whenever I purchase a lens. Not that I believe it improves the photo quality, but because I’m a clumsy oaf and I want to protect an expensive lens. I recently read online somewhere that adding these filters to you lens can produce exactly the sort of issues I’ve always had with this lens. I took it off, and there’s no more problem.

I will certainly be rethinking whether I will ever use a UV filter again.
