Me, Myself and I
EDIT: I’ve added a couple of mildly interesting links in the last paragraph in the section about 110 In The Shade. You should click on them. :)
This is a self-portrait, something I’ve tried from time to time with various degrees of success. This is the first shot I took with my new tripod, and I only chose myself as the subject because I happened to be in a location in which I was the most interesting thing to photograph, which says a lot about my location. The image is very slightly out of focus, which I attribute to a number of things. One, the DOF looks like it was too narrow (the eyes are more in focus than the teeth); two, I’ve never been entirely successful at getting a self-portrait properly focused; and three, I forgot to turn off image stabilization which is always a good idea when the camera is mounted on a tripod.
Anyway, this particular shot was something that was only achievable with my new tripod as it has capabilities my old one didn’t have – namely, to invert the center post so that the camera is upside down between the legs for very low angle shots. In this case, I had the tripod on my desk and my camera set very low.
The posters behind me are of plays that I’ve been involved with for our community theatre group in the past. Yellow is a show called 110 In The Shade (where I played Starbuck, a con-man rainmaker [and, interestingly, performed with this beautiful young lady and photographer]); I created the poster from a design by my lovely wife, who also directed), white is Moon Over Buffalo (for which I was assistant director and designed & created the poster), and the purple one is Picnic (which I directed and proposed the poster art idea to a real artist). There are about 6 other posters on my wall, but they didn’t fit in the shot :)

Great photo. Lighting is wonderful. Is it all natural light or did you use any other light source?
Thanks! Light is just the window behind my head, the florescent ceiling lights, and my sparkling personality. ;-)
Sweet Face :O) Nice work with the new tripod. I’ve never tired a self portrait. Good idea. Thank you for sharing your settings as well.
I don’t try them often because I always mess them up :)
Hate winter also, fortunately winters in MD are not a severe as Iowa. Else I’d go crazy.
I’m moving.
Where? I’ll be in Florida in few weeks…
To Maryland. As soon as I can find a new job and convince my wife and scrounge up the funds and…well, maybe not.
Too many taxes in Maryland. If we didn’t have a child who is a Junior in HS we would have already moved to more tax friendly state.
The photography, however, is amazing!
