Selfy Saturday

I had every intention of getting up at the crack of dawn today and going for an extensive photo walk. But it is raining and muddy and yucky and I holed up indoors instead to play with flash photography and and my brand new $15 remote shutter release.
The remote shutter make it at least possible for the first time for me to get a well-focused photo of myself. I played around with some gels on the flash and ambient light through the windows, adjusting the blinds to various degrees. I also shot through a diffuser – sometimes two diffusers – and various distances. In this case the diffuser was about 5 feet from me and the flash at the same level as my head and well off to the left. The windows that provided the ambient light were to the right and at the same angle as the flash.
The shadows are a bit sharp but I think fits the general color and mood well. It looks like it was shot late at night but it was actually between 9 and 10 AM. All in all it was a fun hour, if a narcissistic one, and I learned a lot about strobe lighting. There’s a smear of glare on my lens that I could do without, but otherwise I’m fairly pleased.
And it’s in focus.

Yeah I get caught up a lot on 8×10 composition. It was necessary to trim the top and bottom of the photo, and that meant the arm had to get trimmed too to keep the aspect ratio. I should probably let myself play a little more loose with aspect ratios, but that’s decades-old design indoctrination from my college days.
