Jigsaw Puzzle

This photograph was taken at the Dudgeon area also, during my first trip to the area with a camera. The camera in question was the Nikon Coolpix 110. I took a series of pictures one morning hoping to capture the sunrise. A series of mistakes caused me to miss the actual sunrise, but I got some good shots in any case.

I arrived at the area about 20 minutes before sunrise. I took a couple of test shots, and my battery died. Not to worry – I had spares. But they turned out to be dead too. Ran into town to get more, ran back to the area, and I found I’d gotten the wrong size batteries. Ran back into town, got the right size, ran back to the area, and the sun was 20 minutes over the horizon. Ah well. Another learning experience for me.

My wife Jill really likes this picture. She says it looks like a jigsaw puzzle picture, which I guess is a compliment. It took some fancy footwork with software to warm it up and make the sky dramatic, as well as add brightness to the trees in the background, but nothing much dodging and burning. It’s one of my favorites so far.

Technical Details: f/3.8, exp. 1/654, ISO 100, focal length 7 mm

What’s good: Composition works (for once!); color; interesting lighting on the tree in upper left center

What’s Bad: Still learning to use image editing software and there are imperfections in the leaves in upper center that were the trade-off to getting a dramatic sky
