Community Band

Community Band

f/3.5; exposure 1/60; ISO 400; 18mm focal length

This is a straight, unimaginative picture of the community band as they are recording a song for the play I am directing, Picnic. Doesn’t really attempt to be artsy, but I learned a lot about my camera taking this picture.

For starters, I learned what image stabilization really does. As I was floating around the room getting different angles, I was also playing with different settings. I avoided using the flash because I didn’t think it would be powerful enough to get a nice, even fill across the room. I toyed with various settings and found to my delight that I could take an exposure as slow as 1/15 and still get a good, sharp picture, something I couldn’t have dreamed of 30 years ago.

This one was a little faster, 1/60th of a second and the original exposure was somewhat darker, but thanks to Lightroom that was a quick and easy adjustment, and worth it to get the slight extra sharpness as the conductor moved her hands.
