This is the culmination of the journey at Effigy Mounds, a10 foot square fenced off overlook on the Mississippi River and a marvelous view of the bluffs on the western bank. The morning I was there it was particularly hazy, even at 10:00 (it took me nearly exactly 3 hours to hike to this point).
The area here is a little cramped, so I had to forego the 50mm lens on this photograph and mount the 18-55mm stock lens. I confess to tweaking the colors and shadows a bit to add drama to the image and make it appear that I had gotten there a couple of hours sooner than I did. I’ve come to the conclusion that you need to start this trek a good hour and a half prior to sunrise in order to maximize the potential photographic opportunities along the way. I don’t even know for sure if it’s open that early.
