f/10, 1/20-1/125, ISO-100, 50mm

Thanks to Michael Tuuk’s advice and encouragement on this post, I took a trip recently with the express purpose in mind of playing depth of field calculations. I wasn’t sure I was going to get anything really creative from the excursion – that wasn’t really the point. I just wanted to play around with settings and challenge myself to predict what the outcome would be . I’d guess out of about 200 shots, I calculated correctly on a little less than 50% of them.

Anyway, here’s about the only photo I feel comfortable posting. I did a little bit of HDR on it to punch it up, but my primary goal was to work on focus. I originally took the shots at f/1.8, and realized that given my distance from the subject the DOF would be more narrow than the pod itself. Sure enough, the computer revealed than none of the 1.8 shots was in focus, but the f/10 shots were perfect.
