Rework Wednesday – No One To Watch Over Me

No One To Watch Over Me

F/6.3, 1/640, ISO-100, 28MM

The first of several photographs I’ve taken of this tree. Alas, I shall never take another one. They cut this down last year, which is a terrible shame. I’ve never seen a tree with more personality. I think this is one of the first photographs I received a heartfelt compliment on from a friend, if a grudging one. It’s a photo that he’d wanted to take himself for a long time.

I myself worked a long time in post-processing on this image. For some reason I didn’t want to go with a silhouette on it, but instead wanted the foreground light enough to see the names on the tombstones. It was not the best decision on my part, if for no other reason than that the names are too small to read anyway. I also inexplicably wanted a hint of texture on the tree, and spent a lot of time with the adjustment brush trying to lighten it up. The result was a horribly-edited photograph that lost much of its potential dramatic impact.

I like this a lot better, and I got it done in just a few minutes, less time than it’s taken me to write this text, in fact. The darker mood adds to the clouds and the general sense of loneliness, and it looks like something taken in the late evening rather than mid-afternoon.
